2025年2月vol.3「バレンタインデー」

「バレンタインデー」の由来といえば、恋人の元に無事に帰れる保証もなく戦争に徴兵される青年たちに同情した「ヴァレンタイン」というローマの神父を記念するためのものと言われています。
彼は、当時のローマ皇帝であるクロディウス2世ゴティクスに抵抗し、秘密裏に結婚式を行っていたことで処刑された後、聖人として宣言されました。

現代では、大切な人にプレゼントを贈ることや愛を伝えることに変わってきました。そういうところはフィリピンも日本も変わらないと思います。
フィリピンでは、女性がチョコを贈りますが、ホワイトデーがないので、同じ日に男性が贈るのも普通ですね。

ついでに「義理チョコ」という言葉はフィリピンにはないのですが、もちろん、家族、同僚、友達にも贈ります！
さすがに本命チョコほど豪華ではありませんが、感謝さえ伝えればきっと喜んでもらえるでしょう。

さらに、フィリピン人は家族の絆があまりに強くて、家族と外食してバレンタインデーを過ごすことも普通になっています。

今年のバレンタインデー、皆さんが大事な人と過ごすことができますように！


One well known story behind the origin of Valentine's Day was that it was meant to commemorate a Roman Priest named Valentine who sympathized with young men to be drafted into war with no guarantee of being able to return to their loved ones. He then defied the ruling Emperor Claudius II Gothicus by secretly holding marriage rituals for couples then was eventually executed for it. After which, he was declared a saint.

In current year, the tradition has changed to simply showing affection to your loved ones through presents and such. In that regard, I think Japan and Philippines are no different. Although in Philippines, women do give men chocolates, there is no White Day, so it is also normal for men to also give women chocolates. Also, Philippines may not a word like "Giri Choco" or obligatory chocolate, but we also do give chocolates to our family, co-workers, and friends! Certainly the chocolate is not as fancy as "Honmei Chocolate" but as long as you show your appreciation for that person, then they'll most certainly be happy to know. Moreover, since Filipinos values strongly value family ties, it's also normal for them to spend Valentine's Day with their family by eating dinner out.
