Maligayang Pasko！メリークリスマス！
今年は、私にとって初めての日本のクリスマスです！
日本ではクリスマスをどのように過ごすのか、メディアで若干読んだことはありますが、やっぱりフィリピンの習わしと比較せずにはいられませんね。
実際に体験したり、周りの人に聞いたり、街巡りをしたりすると、日本の風習がより一層興味深く感じられます。
宗教的な関係性はさておいて、客観的にすぐわかる違いは、日本と違ってフィリピンではクリスマス・イブとクリスマスデイが祝日です。
例えば、フィリピンの学校では12月中旬から1月上旬まで長いお休みになります。この時期に旅行に行く家族は多いです。
そして、カレンダーが9月になった瞬間からフィリピン人は浮かれ始めます！
顔を見ればもうバレバレで、「クリスマスの季節が来た！」という心の声が聞こえてきそうです。
クリスマスをお祝いしたり、楽しんだり、わいわいしたり、フィリピン全体が4ヶ月間お祭り状態になるといっても過言ではないかもしれませんね。
また、フィリピンのイルミネーションの明るさは日本に負けていません！
住宅街の方までさらに輝きが広がっているので、わざわざ混雑する市街地に行かなくても家々の窓から明かりがあふれ出ていますよ！
そのような情景を特別な誰かとディナーを食べながら眺めるのは、まさに"メリー"(楽しい、陽気)な気分でしょう。
ところで、日本では「恋人と過ごす行事」という色合いが強い一方、フィリピンでは家族や友達と過ごす習慣があります。
結婚していないのであれば、恋人同士で過ごすのはめったにないことだと思います。むしろ家族とのパーティーに恋人を誘うことはありますが！
クリスマスデイの25日が近づいてくると、12月中は会社、学校、友達と毎週連続でパーティーを開き、Simbang-gabi(暁のミサ、クリスマス前に9回教会参りをする)にも参加します。
そして24日は家で家族とゆっくり休んで、NocheBuena(ノチェ・ブエナ、クリスマス前夜の家族や親戚との宴会)をしてクリスマス当日を迎えます。
このようにして、フィリピンの何か月にもわたるクリスマス期間は終わりを迎えますが、そう思ったのも束の間！
新年に向けてラストスパートをかけるように、お祭りの熱狂感は続いていきます。
もし日本の寒さが身体にこたえるようなら、フィリピンのクリスマスは暖かいですよ！

This year will be my first time spending Christmas in japan.
I have read a bit about how Japan spends Christmas through media, but I can't help but compare its traditions to the Philippines.
I feel that actually being able to experience, ask people first hand, and walk around the cities, has further deepened my interest in Japanese traditions.
Setting aside the connection to religion, one immediate difference that is easy to point out is that unlike Japan, Christmas day and Christmas Ever are national holidays in the Philippines.
For example, Philippine schools go on break starting mid-December until the end of the first week of January. During this period, families will often go on trips.
And the moment the calendar turns to September, Filipinos will start being merry.
So merry that you can see it on their faces, you can almost hear their inner thoughts saying "yay, Christmas is coming!". Celebrating Christmas, being merry, and being loud, it might not be an exaggeration to say that the entire Philippines goes into full festive mode for an entire 4 months.
When it comes to the city illumination and Christmas lights, Philippines definitely gives Japan a run for its money. The illumination decorates even the house of residences, and even just from one's home, Christmas lights will seep in through the window.
I'm sure that gazing upon that kind of scenery with a special someone would really be a "merry" feeling.
However, in contrast to Japan where Christmas is more commonly considered an event for couples to spend time together; in the Philippines, it's a tradition to spend time with friends and families.
Unless a couple is married, I would think that most couples don't spend it alone on Christmas. In fact, sometimes couples will invite their partner to their family parties.
Once Christmas day on the 25th beckons closer, mid-December is just party after party, with friends, classmates, co-workers; and people will participate in Simbang-gabi where they go to mass at a chapel 9 times before Christmas. Once the 24th arrives, Filipinos will relax with their families, and partake in Noche Buena, a Christmas Eve feast where they welcome Christmas day.
And just like that, Filipinos welcome the few months long Christmas season comes to end, or so you'd think. Just like the last spurt of a race, the festive mood continues until the Philippines welcomes the New Year.
If ever Japan's weather becomes a bit too chilly, then Philippines' warm Christmas will be ready to welcome you.
