The following information is based on averages from 1980 to 2009, as observed by The Japan Meteorological Agency.
In summer Ishinomaki is hot and sultry. In hot years the maximum temperature is about 30°C. However, there are many overcast days to keep the temperature from rising further. On fine days the sea breeze keeps the temperature from becoming as intense as inland areas. Once every few years the cold monsoon blows, and it becomes a cold summer. Sometimes the maximum temperature is lower than 25°C during these cold years.
Our city opens onto the Pacific Ocean, offering surfers the chance to ride the waves. Also, there are many swimming beaches within Ishinomaki.
In winter there is some snow. In shady areas the fallen snow turns to ice, and doesn't melt for up to a few days. There are many fine days during winter, so there can be a very big difference between the daytime and night-time temperatures.
Several ski slopes are located within a 2 or 3 hour drive of Ishinomaki. There is an international ski-jumping competition held every year at Yamagata Mt. Zao, which is a 3 hour drive from Ishinomaki.
Spring and autumn are pleasant seasons with low humidity. However, sometimes it can be dusty in spring as the westerlies carry dust from Eurasia to Japan.
